A Modest Proposal for Colorado

A proposed amendment to the Colorado Constitution that would give legal rights to fertilized human eggs may be headed for the ballot next year, raising the prospect of a heated local debate over abortion at the same time that Democrats are gathering (t)here for their national convention.

So, this bill will give legal rights to a fertilized egg, huh? You know, I don't think this goes far enough. Why should only fertilized eggs be protected? Why shouldn't every human egg be given protection under the law because every egg is a potential human being?

That mean little girls should be encouraged to have sex as soon as they begin to menstruate. Otherwise they are just murdering all of those potential human beings every time they get their period.

And heck, why stop with eggs? I think semen should be protected under the law, too! That would make you a mass murderer every time you masturbate.

Now that is a notion that could win me support from the Catholics, isn't it?

It seems like another example of breathtaking inanity. I would favor giving the air we breath or the water we need to drink legal rights but this has potential repercussions I'd rather we didn't have to contend with. If a fertilized human egg is released in menses, is the girl or woman then libel to prosecution by the State?

Sigh. I agree, derf. Utterly inane. I wish I could summon something pithy to say about this.

Great point about a fertilized egg being released derf. I never thought of that one. Here's another: can a woman be sued by her miscarried fetus if it can be shown that her behavior was risky to the fetus and may have contributed to the miscarriage? If a fertilized egg has rights, why not? This is one stupid, fucking proposed law!

If the law does what it proposes, the miscarried fetus wouldn't need to sue. The STATE would be obliged to prosecute the mother of it's undoing. The charges would likely be murder or manslaughter. Just the threat of that should act as operant conditioning and keep those uppity women in their place.

There are some sick puppies in the other camp. They're just dying to punish SOMEBODY for SOMETHING.

Yes, Bob, it's something to be thankful for... a narcoleptic gobbler buzz. A short respite from our 'race to the bottom' when we can both fulfill the corporate paradigm and thank fortune for our place in the genetic lottery. It almost makes it seem worthwhile. Happy Holidaze to you; may the illusion endure throughout your life.

derf, I'm sure some illusions will persist at various times in my life.

Good, Bob, if they weren't there already, we would have to construct them.

I enjoyed Thanksgiving dinner with a friend who had just returned from Israel. She returned with gifts and shared a brief history of how she had found each item. My gift was a jar of chocolate spread, which I am truly thankful for. It's story centered upon a tourist mecca along the Sea of Galilee named 'Jesus' Boat'. My friend explained how the gift-shop was established at the site of an archaeological dig. It was here, she said, that they had discovered the remains of, you guessed it, Jesus' Boat. I laughed loudly.

I took a little trip myself. You might get a laugh out of it.

Nice one. I like the followup to the story about the atheist (devoted atheist, lol) professor.

Yeah, that was funny. He had to go out and get a few boxes of chalk. I wonder how many pieces he would have to drop before the results of the first trial repeated itself?
