Have you taken a look at MikeHuckabee.com lately? All it shows is a countdown timer that ends on April 15th. Here is what it looks/looked like:
What the fuck is this? Some say it signals when the old Huckster will be launching a new Christian PAC. I've heard others say it is a countdown to the merger of the site with McCain's because he will be the VP. Still others speculate it is a countdown to the rapture.
Whatever he is counting down over there, I'm reasonably sure I won't enjoy what eventually happens on 4/15.

Does anyone enjoy April 15? In this country anyway.
Fear not csm, it is only the dawning of a new website. Sheesh, the things people fear. Boo!
Huck will never be the VP and anyone following the race knows this to be true. Of course the demmys have much more to follow at the moment so you may be out of touch. McCain will chose from the governors of FL, SC, Alaska or Condi as his potential running mate. Condi would be quite a nightmare for the demmys.
condi has already ruled out a spot on the ticket, fcc.
Condi would be an easy target. She is a key member of the GWB administration and is every bit as complicit in the ineptitude and criminal negligence perpetrated by this mess of a president.
true, true. and nothing says "more of the same" better than nominating a current admin official for the next ticket. not a wise choice in a "change" election, i would suspect.
as much as i love 2 speculate on vp's, i can't escape the meaninglessness of the exercise.
if this is a change election, it won't matter who runs with john "more o'da same" mccain.
Is that o'da or odor?
There really is no such thing as a true 'change' election. Not in this day and age.
Don't worry that is just when Mike Up-Chuck-abee will finally take us all out of his misery and committ Seppuku. Too bad he has to wait until the clock counts down though. I wouldn't mind him jumping off a bridge today if he could.
There would just be someone else to take his place. They are almost interchangeable.
speaking of scary people, did y'all see "the lord's boot camp" on cbs last night? very scary. as part of their training, these teenagers practice saving souls (on helpless nursing home residents, no less!), and converting those of other faiths.
there was a point of absurdity when a soul-saving evangelical teen shares her gospel with a mormon mother & daughter at a town fair in indiana. (why us??).
there was another point where evangelist billy graham's grandson tells the young "soldiers" that while they may be feeding the hungry and building houses for people during their missionary trip to africa, those good deeds are not why they are there. they are there to save souls and convert folks to the faith. don't forget!
bawdy, you are absolutely right. there is a whole legion of christians (evangelical AND catholic) who subscribe to the same political philosophies.
witness yesterdays theocratic quote of the day over at dispatches from the culture war:
"The long-term goal of Christians in politics should be to gain exclusive control over the franchise. Those who refuse to submit publicly to the eternal sanctions of God by submitting to His Church's public marks of the covenant--baptism and holy communion--must be denied citizenship, just as they were in ancient Israel."
---Gary North, Political Polytheism: The Myth of Pluralism (Tyler, TX: Institute for Christian Economics, 1989), p. 87.
their agenda is anti-pluralism, and anti-human secularism, and pro-theocracy. or so it would appear.
here's a quick summary of that book.
There IS a group that shares the sentiments of Gary North. But again, it is not the global view of all Christians by any means.
His views come from a theological viewpoint that the majority of Christians would consider corrupted. If you want more info about that, the wikipedia article on Gary North (esp. the links) will give a good overview.
sorry if i gave ya the wrong idea, g. i never meant to imply that gary north's ideas represent ALL of christianity. but even if only 10% of u.s. evangelicals and 10% of u.s. catholics subscribe, that is still a scary number of people.
while it is true that relatively few christians subscribe specifically to dominion theology or christian reconstructionism, it should be noted that much of the christian right believes in dominionism, though most would not recognize the term.
(i swiped the following quote from wikipedia):
"1. Dominionists celebrate Christian nationalism, in that they believe that the United States once was, and should once again be, a Christian nation. In this way, they deny the Enlightenment roots of American democracy.
2. Dominionists promote religious supremacy, insofar as they generally do not respect the equality of other religions, or even other versions of Christianity.
3. Dominionists endorse theocratic visions, insofar as they believe that the Ten Commandments, or "biblical law," should be the foundation of American law, and that the U.S. Constitution should be seen as a vehicle for implementing Biblical principles."
g, my friend, we are stuck in the middle of a culture war, and most christians have their head in the sand, while a minority of christians smear their good name.
(i should note here that the majority of evangelicals believe they are entitled to act on a perceived 'cultural mandate' implied in the genesis 1:28 granting of 'dominion'.)
let me reiterate; i am not attempting to malign all of christianity...only the portion that wages war on "secular" america.
I was listening to alot of the hype on the pope's visit when I heard that Benedict is promoting the old idea that Catholicism holds dominion over all other Christian sects. Is this one more step in this culture war?
Sounds like it to me, Bawdy. One of the things I find bizarre about some aspects of the outlook of the 'religious right' is that on one hand they glom onto Jefferson's use of the word 'God' to insist he was a Christian referring to the Christian deity. On the other hand, if he were around today, and claimed to be (perhaps tongue in cheek or as a jest) a Christian, they would never accept him. He was a Deist, and that's quite different.
Speaking of the pope, don't you find it unsanitary that everyone slobbers on his ring/hand upon greeting him? I'd think twice about even shaking the dude's hand without some Purell!
re: da pope & culture war
--uhm, duh. ;)
also,
speaking of jefferson..
Nice link, Corey, thanks. That's about how I recalled things. I, btw, grew up in a Unitarian-Universalist church. Very interesting. We did have the standard bible study, but also other things as well. When we reached out teen years (7th grade) we were taken to a wide variety of 'churches' around town to witness the types and modes of worship from Roman Catholic to one form of Buddhism. Just my luck at 13 to be taken to the Roman Catholic High Mass at Easter. Dang that was long. And boring. All in Latin too. It was interesting in its way, true, but many of us young teens were nodding off after the first half hour...and this thing went on all afternoon. Ok, I'll stop rambling now. Back to your regularly scheduled debate.
I was going to post that we could sure use our Founding Fathers today to straighten out our checks and balances mess but then I had to correct myself. They would be strung up has heretics, enemies of the corporate state and long- haired liberal intellectuals. Boy, do we deserve the government we have.
Yep. I think you are right about that. But I think you left out a word. The last term should be Long Haired Liberal Intellectual Elitists.
Though by modern standards they certainly were elitists.
Just took a look at Huck's web site and he has launched a new PAC - HuckPAC.
