Fox Sucks (and they are racists, too)

As if Americans needed any more reminders of how closely aligned with the Republican party the Fox News network is, New Year's Eve brings us this new tidbit.

During it's broadcast from New York City, the network encouraged viewers to send in text messages which, if approved by moderators, would scroll across the Fox ticker at the bottom of the screen.

Moderators, however, let this one slip: "HAPPY NEW YEAR AND LET’S HOPE THE MAGIC NEGRO DOES A GOOD JOB. LOVE JEN AND JOHN C."

"Slip," meaning the comment either just 'got past' a negligent moderator, or said moderator thought it was appropriate for broadcast.

Ah, another of their famous 'slips', eh? I wonder how 'genuine' it was, that is, whether it really was from a viewer, or dreamed up by someone on the job? Of course there really are people who would consider that to be perfectly acceptable and uncontroversial.

I don't watch Fox News Channel, but here is a bit of perspective for those who don't know the history:

Obama the Magic Negro-Gate
by Larry Elder

correction: that was a bit of republican perspective, and it certainly glossed over the offenses of limbaugh and saltman.

Actually, Elder calls himself a "Republitarian" (a Libertarian who, for pragmatic reasons, votes Republican).

The perspective was just to show the origin of the "magic negro" term and how/why some Republicans have adopted it. I wish they hadn't. But it's use is less nefarious than one without the background might think.

I disagree. Regardless of its origin, the term is offensive and its appearance on a Fox News crawl is completely unacceptable.

Was it equally offensive and unacceptable when used by a black liberal and printed in the Los Angeles Times? I never heard a peep about it then.

(jumping in)
yes, it was just as offensive...only nobody read the article, so this quickly becomes a "tree falling in the forest but no one is there to hear it - does it still make a sound" type questions.

i was listening to rush when he played the song. he learned quickly that it crossed a line somewhere, and moved on to, uhm, fresher material. when saltsman included the song on his christmas cd, he basically picked the scab and made it bleed. (or, if you liken the press to sheep, he made them bleat).

do you really think rush read the article in question, or the song writer even? maybe the notion was floating around in the zeitgeist... just thinking out loud there, not really asking, unless it pleases you to answer. :)

Since Rush is an entertainer who relies on fresh political material, I assume he has at least a small crew of researchers who have the task of monitoring the bastions of liberal media (NYT, WaPo, LA Times, HuffPost, etc.) for any new things to ridicule.

Like I said, I wish the term had never come up. It falls into that lowest level of humor that I don't particularly like.

Yet you seem to keep jumping in to sorta defend it, G... why?

Anonymous said...

Not really defending it. I originally just intended to provide the background for those who might not know. On its face, it sounds racist and evil. With the background, I'd say it falls more in the category of stupid and coarse. I wouldn't have known about it or said anything, but I happened to have read the Larry Elder article a couple days ago. I rarely listen to Rush (maybe twice a year) or watch FoxNews (only slightly more).

What a stupid post. Jump on Daily Kos or Huffington and watch the real idiots in action.

Those who refer to Fox as Republican are the ones who don't watch. The audience is almost equally divided between the parties. We all know BHO he is the "Messiah" according to his own. We don't need Fox to tell us who he is.

Yes, I’d say stupid and coarse… and then racist and ugly. But it truly took anonymous’ comments to draw it into focus for me.

derF? You're alive? I can't remember the last time I saw your moniker pop out of the shadows.

your acerbic wit is always appreciated, derf. hope u r well!

Yes, Scarlet there is an acerbic wit. I'm always looking to learn, so, am inclined inclined towards observation followed by reflection. Perhaps then there might be room for comment.

I have feeling a little under the weather lately, thank you for asking. So, I decided to turn over a new leaf.

Guess what i found on the other side?
