"Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and not clothed. The world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children...."

Ike was attempting to get the SU to understand what the arms race was costing. This was not in condemnation of the US. Read the speech Einstein.
Of course when they did not cooperate what did he do? The man was a realist and a good one.

You'll find the complete speech here, csm. I think Thinker has gotten you on this one, he is 100% correct. Though that doesn't make your original thought(Reasonable Republican President)false.
verification word: beaster
So why would anyone immediately think that I was lauding Ike for condemning the US. What the fuck!?!?!
And my "original thought" here is the only thought I professed on this particular post: Ike was the last reasonable Republican president.
The last "reasonable" President was Thomas Jefferson, period.
Then again, maybe Madison.
I s'pose you could make an argument that a reasonable man would not want to be president, huh?
I have heard a similar argument. Why would we ever want to elect a President who is willing go through what we make them go through to become President? When the President was just the humble administrator of the laws Congress enacts as happened through the first hundred years of this Republic, this was a much smaller problem.
