Sad, But No Surprise in Recent Survey

A recent survey conducted by Gallup indicates some non-surprising results:
  • Religious folks tend to disbelieve the science of evolution

  • Republicans tend to disbelieve the science of evolution
Gee, I wonder if there is any connection?

csm,

I just recently received an e-mail concerning the movie "The Heart of the Beholder" and I was wondering if you knew anything about it. If you do, do you recommend it?

I recommend "The Shock Doctrine."

This is a sad representation of America.

Maybe its the word 'believe'. Science shouldn't be believed. It should be hypothesized... tested... accepted or refuted... but never believed.

Bawdy - I haven't heard of "The Heart of the Beholder." What does it purport to be about?

derF - I watched the short film you pointed us to and it has me interested enough to go out and buy the book. Haven't bought it yet, but I intend to do so.

And YES! YES! YES! about science and belief. I try to never use the word because it doesn't convey enough meaning in its current usage to be helpful.

If it wasn't clear, "the word" I choose not to use is "belief."

I'm guessing it was clear to everyone here who remains... it is just difficult to stop old habits like explaining the obvious to some of the old Freethinkers' posters (I think you know who I mean)

csm,

I just got the e-mail today so I haven't had much time to really investigate, but what I can glean at this point is that this movie is about a family which runs a video store(and they happen to be atheists) which of course supplies their customers(consumers, derF)with all videos a normal video store would, including some videos which the local right wing pastors have a problem with and aren't afraid to voice that opinion. I guess this movie is about the fight that ensues. The e-mail and Wiki indicate the movie has won many awards at indepenent movie festivals, but the church lobby has been successful in keeping this movie out of mainstream moviehouses. To get around the lobby, they have streamed the whole movie(in 72 video segments) for free at Beholder.com. I watched the trailer at lunch, but haven't had time to watch much more. Sounds like something right up your alley.

It does sound like something I'd enjoy... I'll have to track it down when I get some time (things are getting hectic for me at work and I've got quite a bit of travel coming up).

I feel certain Americans believe the science of evolution. Dogs become dogs, cats become cats, etc. That is true observable science.

What Americans just don't buy into is the faith-based evolution. Things like life forming from matter, evolution across the species? Assumption upon assumption upon assumption is science in process but far from observable and is no more credible than the Genesis account.

Marino, if you want to be listened to here, crack open a book or two and learn what you are talking about before making idiotic comments...

I will be leaving the idiotic behind.
