I thouhgt I'd share this little video as a tribute to the pope's visit to the US.

This is really funny, but I feel a little twinge at laughing.

Then how about this classic bit of music from your favorite and mine, Tom Lehrer!

With all due respect, bob, there is light years difference between the sensibilities of the two offerings. Though maybe even Mr. Lehrer would make some changes to his tune today. But that just wouldn't be his style. It's the difference between folk rock and hardcore punk. I have to hand it to you though, you are a gentle soul and that is a good thing.

Hey, I never claimed it was in exactly the same vein as the video, just that you might enjoy it.

I remember when Tom Lehrer made the comment that political satire became obsolete when Henry Kissinger won the Nobel Peace Prize.

ahh, tom lehrer!! yay! :D

thank you bob. it has been so long since i heard the vatican rag, the masochism tango or even poisoning pigeons in the park. great stuff, and great memories!

now, bawdy, i think i understand your first point. when the kid said he was going to go cut himself, that was hard 2 hear. and to tell ya the truth, i don't think that 'bit' had the same comedic approach as the rest of the skit.

i heard the pope spent a full hour with a group of victims, and that is something. but i also read that he's (partly) blaming attitudes in the u.s. for the scandal, and that he was personally involved in shuffling priests before the boston globe broke the story.

of course, if that is true, it occurred before the pope magically became "infallible", so it doesn't really count.

in their odd little world, anyways.

It was funny, but I am laughing at protecting against pedophilia. As a disclaimer, my stepson was molested when he was seven by a family friend(some fucking friend, huh). I laughed as I said, but it really isn't a funny subject. I will say if I view it again, I would laugh again.

And bob, don't take what I said as a cut. It was a compliment from my heart. I wouldn't change you(if I could) one iota.

And please see "Condi has to go". I would like some reaction.

Bawdy, I never would take that as a cut or insult. I'm flattered. Thanks. Corey, you'll find lots of ol' Tom on Youtube. By some small chance do you also know of Flanders & Swann? British comedy team of the 50's and 60's.

I understand the "twinge" Bawdy, but I am one of those people who think that there is humor to be found in EVERYTHING. Of course, sometimes distance or time is required if the attempt at humor in question hits close to home.

420, Louis! I'm fired-up!

Corey, cool stuff huh? Now..consider that I grew up listening to them and Tom Lehrer as well as classical music and show tunes...might give you some insight on me.

I remember seeing Tony Randall perform "Madeiera, m'dear" on some variety show (maybe his) in the 1970's...

Ceroill said...

I believe that was on the Tonight Show, and he stood on stage with a hat in one hand, and resting his elbow on a small column.

Is there some significance to 420 aside from being yesterday's date?

coreydbarbarian said...

bob, see this link for a 420 reminder.

also, by chance, did you ever listen to the dr. demento show? the name spike jones keeps coming to mind, since we've been discussing lehrer, swann and flanders...

csm said...

Dr. Demento was my introduction to a LOT of great music. I first heard Poisoning Pigeons in the Park on the Doc's show. And Rewriting the National Anthem by Albert Brooks (a classic if ever there was one)!

Ceroill said...

Oh, of course I listened to Doc! But by then I was already familiar with Tom Lehrer and some other bits of oddness. I have one of the Doctor Demento's Delights albums, with greats such as The Cockroach That Ate Cincinatti, and Who Put the Benzedrine in Mrs Murphy's Ovaltine.

Ohhhhh...ok, tht 420. Cool.
