Bible Fight

OK, this is frivolous but kinda fun, so I just had to post about it.

Watch out for Noah - he can summon floods and sic' his animals on ya. But, then again, Eve can call up Adam from the mud and whip you with her snake.

I don't know what causes folks to create such silly things. It sure does seem like some people have a whole heckuva lot of time on their hands.

(I just read that fact on Freethinkers -- must have missed it earlier -- and I'm sitting here laughing my ass off at 5:30 am.)

csm, when you mentioned Noah...
I have been having this thought roll around my brain lately. Basically, religious folks believe Noah went around warning of impending diaster and none of the wicked people would listen.
Well, isn't Al Gore warning of impending disaster and, instead of listening, the religious folks just call him "Mr. Ozone" or some other petty bullshit and tell us not to listen to his "ranting and raving"?

Kind of ironic, huh?

It's almost traditional for prophets to be derided and not taken seriously until it's too late. Not saying that Al is a prophet, just recalling how it seems things typically went for prophets in the bible. But generally those who are greatly concerned about something are often called alarmists, chicken little, and otherwise made fun of and shoved aside. In many cases this may be deserved. In others it may not. I seem to recall seeing one analogy to the environmental situation some years back.

Two men are driving in a car on a highway. The map they have is very confusing, and they can never agree on a route to take. At one point one of them says he sees a sign that says Bridge Out Ahead, but the other man didn't see the sign, so he won't believe the one who says he did. Given that situation, what would be the rational thing to do?

Al would be taken more seriously if every 20 years was another doomsday prediction of global warming OR global cooling. Its been going on for a century. Cry wolf enough times and eventually the people will not listen. His science is not conclusive and thus much controversy. Not to mention, 1983 they claimed in 20 years it would be too late.

Interesting observation, Bev. I put more stock in Al (well, not just Al, but the reams of scientific evidence he presents) than in Noah.

And coreydbarbarian - I love Robot Chicken. My favorite is the one where William Shatner's toupee leaves his nightstand each night to go out and fight crime.

My question to everybody, what tack should we take to stem global warming which will not roil the financial systems throughout the world? Or is the roiling of the financial sytems throughout the world a fair trade?

I don't think that the roiling of the world's economy is necessarily a by-product of working to decrease the impact of global warming. Like Heathen noted in an earlier post in another thread here, we should be going nuclear. Nuclear energy is cheaper than coal and very safe these days. It should be our national policy to build new nuclear facilities to power our electric grid - and to work with other countries to help them do the same.

I also think much more can be done to diminish our reliance on fossil fuels. This will cause some type of impact on the world's economy, but only because we've dawdled for so long. We can move toward bio fuel faster until we get a better alternative. Yes, this might cost more (hence some roiling), but the long-term impact would cause even greater roiling.

We can also stop the stupidity with regards to hemp. Hemp is a rapidly renewable resource for creating paper, clothing, etc. And the only reason we don't produce such items in bulk is because of the stupid fear of marijuana. A renewable source of paper would reduce the need to cut down trees (save the rainforests!) that help balance the ecosystem.

These are some simple steps that can be taken almost immediately if only our leadership would grow a pair!

bawdy, in answer to your question, I concur with csm's entire post, epsecially nuclear.
I would also like to repeat that I think we've made our worse mistakes as a nation worrying about the economy instead of our moral compass (for example, hanging onto slavery). I believe the economy is vital, but doing the greater good within a good economy can be achieved with good old yankee innovation, imo.

There are plenty of "greens" who want to rule out nuclear too. One article I read recently had a different spin on biofuels. The basic gist was the more we use biofuels the cost of food will go up not just because we would be using food for fuel but that we would grow fuel on land we could use to feed people. Also with biofuel becoming a cash crop, the incentive would be to cut down forests to plant fuel crops; not a great thing for the planet either.

yeah, i've got a problem with biofuel, 2. it sure looks like the cost of sugar doubled when brazil started using it for biofuel. in the past year (here in indiana) milk has risen $1.00 per gallon because of the increased demand for corn (for the ethanol).
at first, i thought woodchips & switchgrass & pond scum would work, but i could see the environments delicate balance being thrown out of whack, so...

still a big fan of nuclear power.

also a fan of solar and wind power. wind power is getting more affordable for the individual homestead. solar, just wait until the nanotech sector kicks it up a notch. we're talking roof shingles that double as solar panels, and with a much higher efficiency that today's solar panels. that, and your shingles would outlive the homeowner.

I've worked on the maintenance of nuclear power plants. That doesn't make me an expert but it does give me insights that are not commonly shared. Becoming familiar with the process has made me aware of terms like dosimetry, glassification, half-life and elephant's foot. I've seen a disproportionately high number of tradesmen with an extensive nuclear work-history die of one form of cancer or another. I personally experienced shared perceptual changes when in nuclear containment. But the key issue for me has to be half-life; the amount of time it take for radioactive material to reduce the powerful charge (?) it has by half. The time span is mind boggling, extending into the future beyond the lives of our children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and on ad nauseum. Through that period radioactive wastes must be safely stored, if we wish to avoid random mutations.

Good points derF, add to that the fact we haven't built a nuclear facility in a while(the last one is about forty miles from me right now)gives me pause also. Would we as a country let a firm from another country(France maybe) build one for us? I doubt it.

I think one of the most interesting statements in the Penn & Teller program is that although existing nuclear power plants are quite safe, new nuclear ppower plants would be even safer. I also liked the demonstartion films showing canisters used for radioactive waste being subjected to wrecks far beyond what is reasonable to expect and experiencing no damage...
