Two Ladies Who Definitely Do Not Like Sarah Palin

Rock group Heart, angry that its 70's hit "Barracuda" is being used as the unofficial theme song for Republican Vice Presidential nominee Sarah Palin, is biting back at the Alaska governor.

"The Republican campaign did not ask for permission to use the song, nor would they have been granted that permission," according to a statement issued late on Thursday on behalf of the sisters.

Why do Republicans keep on trying to co-opt songs like this without first seeking out the right to use them? I remember when Reagan started to use "Born In The USA" until Bruce Springsteen asked him to stop (it was obvious the Reagan camp did not understand the song).

Hey Republicans! Leave artistic endeavors to Democrats, why doncha... stick to things you know like taking away our rights, wiretapping us, and gay sex in public restrooms!

Actually, they don't need the artist's permission or approval in most cases. Most recordings are registered with ASCAP. And anyone with an ASCAP license can use any song they like according to the terms of the license. And the artist gets paid for its use through ASCAP.

True, of course, but it is the height of stupidity to use a song as your "theme" without checking to see if the artist is on board. There is a difference between using a song as a "theme" and playing songs at a convention or event... different songs... here and there...

Interesting and rather odd (to my mind). Also, it seems again that they didn't quite understand the song they attempted to utilize. At least as I recall the song in question, the term 'barracuda' is used as a pejorative about the person being addressed by the singer.

Now I'm wondering how many conservative musicians are out there who would be honored to have their music represent Ms Palin...surely there must be someone...

..a country & western artist, no doubt..

Elton John's "The Bitch is Back"... probably not. How about "Stacy's Mom" by Fountains of Wayne? No, probably not that one either. Country it is... but no Dixie Chicks, I'm guessing!

ed over at dispatches suggested "wang dang sweet poontang" by ted nugent...and he's even a republican!

while i was there, i noticed that he mentioned a new freethinkers site, the edger, but all one word. from my quick glance, i'd say they have a staff of writers or sumthin.
and the bonus is, they're on the atheist blogroll.

Thanks for sharing The Edger. It looks to be a very high quality "blog" with a lot to offer.

And LOL about Wang Dang Sweet Poontang!
